Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, and Carefree, Arizona – LASIK Eye Surgery

Blade-free LASIK is an outpatient procedure designed to reduce or eliminate the need for corrective lenses. During the procedure, the patient's cornea is reshaped to correct the refractive errors myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and/or astigmatism. Using CustomVue® technology, the laser is calibrated based on the unique measurements of the patient's eyes. This technology may reduce halos and glare and/or improve night vision in some patients.  Patients are usually able to return to their normal routines within 24 hours following the LASIK procedure – with either no or minimal dependence on glasses and contact lenses. At our practice, serving residents of Cave Creek, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Carefree, and surrounding Arizona communities, LASIK eye surgery is performed by our experienced ophthalmologist, Dr. David Johnson.

LASIK Candidates

Though LASIK eye surgery has helped millions of patients achieve clearer vision, the procedure is not suitable for everyone. Ideal LASIK candidates should:

  • be over 21 years of age
  • have a stable prescription over the last 12 months and fall within -1.00 to -11.00 for myopia, up to +5.00 for hyperopia, and up to +5.00 for astigmatism
  • be in generally good health

LASIK may not be right for individuals who:

  • are pregnant or nursing
  • are diabetic
  • have an autoimmune disease
  • have an eye disease or eye injury
  • are currently taking prescription medication that could prevent proper healing

For those who are not suitable candidates for LASIK, PRK may be a viable alternative. At McCormick Eye Center, patients from Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Carefree, Arizona, and beyond can schedule a free LASIK eye surgery consultation. Dr. Johnson conducts a thorough eye examination and consultation to determine each patient's candidacy.

The LASIK Procedure

At McCormick Eye Center, Dr. Johnson performs the CustomVue™ blade-free LASIK procedure. This revolutionary development in laser vision correction uses WaveScan® digital technology to ensure optimal results. The WaveScan® WaveFront® System is a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool that accurately measures the unique characteristics of each patient's eye, producing a map that is used to calibrate the excimer laser.

Dr. Johnson uses the VISX® STAR S4™ Active Trak® Excimer Laser System, which is FDA approved for the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. To use the VISX® laser, a doctor must go through rigorous training and testing to become VISX® certified. More people in the United States have been treated with the "gold standard" VISX® laser than all other lasers combined.

After anesthetic eye drops are applied to the eye, Dr. Johnson uses the IntraLase® laser to create a micro-thin flap on the outermost layers of the cornea. After folding back the flap to reveal the underlying corneal tissue, Dr. Johnson begins reshaping the cornea with the excimer laser. The excimer laser is calibrated using the patient's measurements captured earlier with the WaveScan WaveFront® System. He gently replaces the flap, which self-adheres to the tissue beneath. This quick, natural adhesion eliminates the need for stitches or sutures.

Post-LASIK Recovery

The recovery process for LASIK eye surgery varies from patient to patient. It is not unusual, however, for patients to experience a mild burning or itching sensation immediately following LASIK. It is important not to rub the affected eye(s), as this may dislodge the flap and interfere with healing. Dr. Johnson may recommend a mild pain reliever and/or medicated eye drops. You will use an eye shield when sleeping to protect the affected eye(s) during the course of healing. Other side effects may include light sensitivity, blurry vision, dry eyes, and fluctuating vision. These are generally mild and disappear over time. Any concerns, vision questions, or discomfort should be discussed with Dr. Johnson during follow-up appointments. LASIK patients may call Dr. Johnson anytime they have concerns.

Patients should wait one to three days after the procedure to participate in non-contact sports and should wait at least four weeks before resuming activities such as football, boxing, or martial arts. To avoid irritation and infection, patients should not swim or use a hot tub or whirlpool for one month and should abstain from using cosmetics or creams around the eye area for two weeks.

LASIK patients are scheduled to see Dr. Johnson within 24 hours of their LASIK procedure. At this appointment, patients are encouraged to schedule additional follow-up appointments at regular intervals during the first six months following the procedure.
