Premium Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implants – Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, and Surrounding Areas
Premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs) are a safe and effective means of restoring sight to patients undergoing cataract surgery or clear lens exchange surgery. Some patients are good candidates for a clear lens exchange. Although they may not have a cataract, they may elect to replace the natural lens with a premium IOL to reduce their dependence on corrective lenses. This also eliminates the need for cataract surgery in the future.
Made from a bio compatible material, multifocal IOLs are inserted beneath the cornea during an outpatient procedure. The advanced technology behind multifocal IOLs makes them an innovative solution to the loss of clear vision and has allowed millions of people to see better without the use of glasses or contacts. What Are Premium IOLs?
During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye that has become clouded over time is removed. An IOL serves as an artificial replacement for the eye's natural lens, allowing patients to see clearly after treatment. Prior to the development of IOL implants, patients who underwent cataract surgery had to wear thick eyeglasses or contact lenses to be able to see well after the removal of the eye's natural lens.
Approved by the FDA in 1981, IOL implants have actually been in use since the mid-1960s. The first generation of IOLs is known as monofocal IOLs. Premium IOLs represent an innovative improvement in IOL technology, allowing good distance and near vision, without glasses for some patients.
Premium IOLs vs. Monofocal IOLs
There are two basic types of IOLs: monofocal and premium (sometimes referred to as multifocal). Traditional IOLs, also known as monofocal IOLs, restrict patients' vision, allowing them to see well at one distance only (near, intermediate, or far). With monofocal IOLs, patients must rely on corrective lenses in order to be able to focus on objects at other distances. Premium or multifocal IOLs, on the other hand, offer patients the ability to see clearly at more than one distance without glasses. Although premium IOLs allow a greater range of vision than monofocal IOLs, the procedure required to implant each type of lens is similar.
Premium IOL Candidates
Ideal candidates for premium intraocular lens implants at our Scottsdale and Fountain Hills area practice typically:
- are between the ages of 21 and 80
- have a clinically significant cataract, but are in otherwise excellent ocular health
- communicate a strong desire for a range of vision with reduced dependence on corrective lenses

Cataract Removal with Monofocal or Premium IOL Implant Procedure
During the outpatient cataract treatment procedure, Dr. Johnson makes a small incision in the cornea using ultrasound technology. He gently removes the clouded lens and carefully inserts either a monofocal or premium IOL.
Clear Lens Exchange with Monofocal or Premium IOL Implant
The same procedure is used to remove the unclouded natural lens for the patient that desires decreased dependence on glasses, either as an alternative to LASIK or PRK or to eliminate reading glasses. In this case, the patient may elect a premium IOL.
Dr. David Johnson uses the "no-stitch" method of implanting IOL (intraocular lens) implants at our Scottsdale practice, also serving Fountain Hills. Less invasive than the traditional technique, the "no-stitch" method allows fast visual recovery -- in some cases within 24 hours of the procedure and usually within one to two weeks of the procedure.
Types of Premium IOLs
Each premium IOL manufacturer uses a different technology to achieve the goal of multifocality. After examining your eyes and discussing your vision objectives with you, Dr. Johnson can make a recommendation regarding the IOL that would be best for you. ReSTOR® IOLs
The secret to clear vision can be found at the “heart” of the ReSTOR® lens. At the center of the lens begins a series of steps that radiate outward in concentric circles. This precisely calibrated tapering of the lens allows light to enter the retina smoothly, which leads to better focusing power. Designed to treat both distance and near vision, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens offers patients clearer vision with minimal dependence on glasses.
ReZoom™ IOLs
Boasting state-of-the-art Balanced View Optics™ technology, the ReZoom™ lens is divided into different zones, each designed to focus on a particular distance in a specific light range. The zones work together to maximize visual capacity. Patients diagnosed with cataracts or presbyopia that have difficulty reading, driving at night, seeing objects close up, or seeing objects that are far away may be good candidates for ReZoom™ IOLs.
crystalens® IOLs
Modeled after the human eye, crystalens® IOLs take a different approach to clear vision than other multifocal intraocular lens implants offered at our Scottsdale practice. Designed to work with the eye muscle, crystalens® IOLs help patients focus on objects at varying distances and light conditions. Hinges on either side of the lens allow it to move back and forth as the eye changes focus, flexing to meet each patient's individual visual needs.
